Yesterday I dropped off the completed project to Ann Marie Bolen at the American Heart Assoc. here in Lancaster. Here are the details on this painting

"Team Go Red" theme for the event-ideas flooded with thoughts of sports, workouts, practices, perseverance, discipline. The textured hearts represent the unspoken color of red. I selected the metallic gold, silver, and bronze colors to show team spirit of winning like at the Olympics, being fit and working to be your best.

Heart Assoc. Go Red for Women Project

A few weeks ago, I was asked to submit a painting for the Heart Assoc., Go Red for Women fundraiser event. If my painting is selected, it will be auctioned off at the event and I believe they will be using the painting on note cards. Very cool opportunity and great organization! Thanks to Kelly Trach for thinking of me!

I'm working on the texture of the background, which is the all white picture. Once that is dry, I'll start to paint. I'll probably do several paintings and then try and select the best one for the event. Any painting I do not use will be available for sale.

Yesterday was a family day in the studio which I cherish. Hubby working on hubby projects, Veda and me painting, and Wiley warming up by the heater! I love that my little girl loves to paint just like her mommy. She even started to work on her own heart for the event.

Thaddeus Stevens Display

Got a call late this afternoon with an oppt to display art at Thaddeus Stevens Womens Center located in the basement of the Meller building. Packed up some older pieces and headed over to display them. Retro Space I, II, & III. Also Empty Martini.

Tomorrow is Homecoming at Thaddeus. They also have a street fair with games, face painting ant a few other kid related things 11-1 (free I believe). There is also a Car Show from 11-3. Football game starts at 1.

Wow, can't believe it's been almost a year since I've been out in the studio. Now that Veda is in school, I have great hopes to be back out there very soon. Almost made it today, but needed to go for a run.

Good news. Sold a painting yesterday. Thank you Robin for your purchase! I can't wait to see it in your living room next 2 the sister painting! I appreciate your support!

This summer has been filled with many wonderful memories. Looking forward to getting back in the studio now that I have time!

Melody at Millport Event

What a wonderful evening and a fun event. Millport Conservancy is really cool. I would like to have time to go down and hike the trails.

Looking forward to the event next year. Food was very delish and music was great! Love Jazz! Nice to see some art friends and nice make new ones too! Got to spend time with my mom. She was my helper.

2011 is upon us! Hoping to make this a productive painting year/selling one too! Right now I have nothing major in the works. Still haven't found time to work on the new site and not sure that's the right thing to do. Maybe the right thing is to post my art on Etsy Community site??? I need to talk to a few friends to see how they are doing on it.

Had a nice conversation about photography with hubbies brother-in-law who takes amazing photo's. It's cool to see how his style has changed over the last few years! You can see his stuff at http://lamarpics.com on smugmug.

Winter is hard for me. The short days are just not my thing...plus the studio is cold cold cold. I have been crafting with my 4 1/2 year old so I am allowing the creative juice to flow...just not in any amazing paintings.

New York New Idea

I have the Trees Galore at the Lancaster Museum of Art that I need to get something ready for. Thinking about a cool silver textured metallic trees with purple.

Maine New Ideas

Now that it's getting cooler I might be able to stand it in the studio...this summer was HOT. We just got back from Maine...totally loved it up there and can't wait to return. I was inspired by the many groovy shops along the way. Looking forward to trying my hand at Oil Canvas Rugs and maybe some Felting. Cheers for now.

Hydrangea

Wow it is hot outside. Too hot to work in my 2nd floor studio with no air. Plus paint and heat do not go hand and hand.

The last 2 weeks I haven't been in the studio although I'm hoping to be out there this week... I have been taking photos of cool flowers with the thought of maybe paintings something using them in it. Would like to sharpen my sketching skills. Maybe a watercolor....who know. Anyways purple cone flowers, hydrangea and bee. They are all in my back yard.

The Hydrangea's in my back yard are this brilliant purple color. When we bought the house they were the coolest blue and every year I have great hopes that they will return but this year...PURPLE! Even cooler! The Hydrangea is along our fence and belongs to our 80+ year old neighbor Ruth. She said that when she planted it the color was bright pink. This year the root system had gone under the fence and a bright pick hydrangea is growing on our side of the fence next to the purple. Neat story!

Fun in the sun is great BUT......Don't forget multiple applications of sunblock! Enjoy!!!

Cherry Painting Progress

Got time to paint last night and am very excited about the new piece. My hubby even thought it was cool. He said that it looks a lot like my photo...way cool-seeing that I never paint anything that looks real. I really like it although it needs to shine... A few coats of poly and we're in business. The poly will really make the texture pop. I'm hoping to put those coats on tonight.

Cherry Painting

The other day my cousin can to visit and she really wanted to paint something for her dad so Anna, Veda (my daughter) and me went out to the studio for a few hours...Anna worked on a painting for her dad, Veda worked on many paintings and I worked on a painting of Cherries.

Really like it, still a work in progress-but think it's cool so far. Hoping to work more tonight.

Cherry Hill Orchard

This week I went to Cherry Hill Orchard to pick cherries with my daughter and stepmother. We had a blast and the cherries are Amazing! Yummy. I brought my 13.5 lbs home washed them and just thought they looked so way cool...so in great V Tate style I took some groovy pics! I'm hoping to do a sketch or painting of them.

Lapp Project

What a nice rainy day! A great day to work-not to hot or cold to be in the studio and perfect for paint to dry. Anyways, I've been commissioned to do a painting for a clients living room. He's given me his color preferences and some idea's to work with. I haven't actually seen the space but I know that he's looking for an unframed canvas piece. Probably around 2' x 2'. So here's what I've come up with...

Gray, black, yellow and Washington Redskin Red-colors and the idea is to have those colors on the side and then have them join in the middle swirling around. I think it looks cool. Haven't picked a title for it yet but I can't wait to show this to the client and get his thoughts.

Prince Street Show Come to End

It's the end of May and time for my art to move out of it's wonderful space at Prince Street Cafe... The show was excellent. As I posted on Facebook, I sold the painting "Fly Away." Very Very Cool!

Fabulous Spring Opens at Prince Street

Fabulous Spring just opened today at the Prince Street Cafe in downtown Lancaster. My work will be on display and for sale until the end of May.

The paintings look amazing! Special thanks to my hubby who made all the frames for the the canvas paintings!!! I love you!

Would love to hear some comments on what the public things of the new pieces!

The New Collection

So here we go...I've got my canvas ready and now it's time to paint! Oh yeah I decided on canvas (for now).

Thank goodness my hubby fired up the heater in the studio before I went out this last week. Just a little cold! So I'm not sure what direction the new collection is going but my thought is to use some new fun colors and texture. I'm in a spring mood so we'll see! I did get 2 paintings started this week. Here they are.

For those of you who have seen the Umbrella paintings, they will be part of the show!

I hang my show on April 1st in the afternoon. I will not be there for the 1st Friday in April but am planning on 1st Friday in May.

First Work Session of 2010

OK so the first work session of the year should have happened like 3 weeks ago but the family including myself were all sick. Fun stuff!

So tonight what did I do...well I went to Lowes to buy paint, yes Lowes. I buy some of my paint there. When I'm painting big, it makes life so much nicer to have a gallon vs. a small 5 oz tube to cover a 5' canvas. I was going to buy Masonite tonight too but decided to wait until hubby was along. Still up in the air canvas or Masonite-I like both probably prefer canvas but canvas isn't great for transportation to shows. Plus I have frames an that my husband could cut the Masonite to fit...guess I'm talking myself into Masonite.

I also sorted frames...some were totally yuck-o and I also played around with some of my new paint. My studio was really really cold. My propane heater does a nice job but it's like 30 outside and painting in winter clothing is a little hard.

Umbrella

So my next project is getting ready for the spring show at Prince Street...which reminds me I need to confirm with Ed... anyways I've decided to paint some Umbrella's.

The inspiration:I was at Cape May this last spring and while my daughter was napping I sat and stared out at my old friends the Beach and Ocean. Many of my younger years were spent out playing on them and since my skin cancer in 1996 I haven't really been back. While I was sitting on the deck I noticed all the colorful umbrellas all over the beach...how cool! I even went as far to do a quick watercolor so I would remember what I saw and for those of you who know me that must be something...me sketch...haahaa! Anyway here are the pic. My mood: Playful and excited to be painting again. My drink: Water...how exciting My music: none -TV on. The paintings aren't finished, I'll up-date next week with them hopefully finished!

Yup I'm back...we'll at least I'm set up again. I've been getting my one night a week to work but haven't been doing much art. Mostly just having down time and thinking about projects . Anyways I ran into Ed from Prince Street and our conversation has motivated me to get working on some of the new ideas that I been thinking about. I'm hoping to be showing at Prince Street again in 2010! Nothing on the books yet but I'll keep you all posted!

First project first. I'm donating a painting to the Lancaster Museum of Art for their
Trees Galore event. Here are some pics. I was thinking about how I haven't really been doing many watercolors and how I really really enjoyed doing them...although they are small. Which can be frustrating at times. Here are the two piece I worked on tonight...very simple...but I think cool!

Next on my list of things to do tonight is lots of canvas prep work so I can start playing around with new ideas!

Wax

Yippee! Studio time!!! Last weekend I went to the Keystone Gala...totally way cool...and got to meet and talk to lots of artists. One of my new friends, Megan, suggested using wax to add texture to my paintings. I've wanted to try some new things and just haven't had time. Last night I bought a block of wax, melted it on my hubby's way cool camp stove, and did some art. Here are some pictures of my fun.

Mood: excited and motivated to try something new.
Drink: Labatt Blue
Music: none...TV...Lie to Me and Am. Idle (sorry to say)

Music: They Might be Giants, No and I can't remember the other album. I have it written down out in the studio.

Thoughts: Goals working on a piece to donate to the Keystone Art and Culture Center Gala coming up in May and trying to get a few new piece ready for DipCo's show. Plus I'm hoping to do the Lititz Art Show at the End of July, so I need a few pieces for that. Man O'day I have a lot to get down.

Wanted to work on paper instead of canvas. Love using textures. Started a flower painting and another painting with lots of color. I also painted over some small coffee cups paints solid colors. They were missing something. They look better. Excited to frame them.

Bummer the Prince Street Show ends tomorrow! Looking forward to working with them in the future!

Prince Street Show

Friday night was beautiful! It felt like spring! I arrived at the cafe around 5 and picked a table to begin the evening. I let the Prince St. staff know I was there and got a cup of coffee... not really sure what to do since most of the people were there to just hang out and not there to see me so I grabbed a barfly and started to read. I was soon greeted by some familiar faces and the night official began. Time went so fast although my feet would not agree.

Attached are some pictures of the cafe on Friday night, I wish I would have gotten some of my friends. Oh and of course I spent most of Friday thinking about what to wear and I don't even have a picture of myself from that evening...bummer on all photo accounts! I'll have to remind my hubby that he's in charge of that next time! Anyways tones of people were in, too many to name, but thank you for taking the time to support me! It was great to see you all!

Day Before Show

I'm very excited about tomorrow! First Friday downtown!!! I'll be at the Cafe from 5-8 come down and say hi!! Tonight I'm going to be working on my book containing the stories of my paintings. It's all the notes and info about the paintings. I try and document the normal title, medium and value along with my mood, music, drink and any crazy info about the painting (you can see what I'm talking about on my website www.vanessatate.com). I was able to work last week which was very good because THE SHOW at Prince Street is going up on Wednesday...a week early!!!! Here's a painting that will be in the show just adding some poly to to it to zip it up a little! It's called Secret Garden 2...someone owns Secret Garden 1..very cool beans! Blue Dandelion is framed, the postcards went out and I'm just making title cards for the walls and working on my Bio (which is never fun) and trying to the new paintings on the website. Hard to believe a week has passed. No studio time this week. My husband isn't feeling well so I'm doing some computer work to prepare for the show...you know working on my Bio and Artist Statement, finalizing paintings and making list of this to do. I'm also trying to come up with a good photo to use of myself for the show...check out the new profile photo.

Oh also got to explore Abstract Expressionism tonight and a few abstract artists like myself...one I really liked was Lorranie G. Huber. Chow for tonight. Hopefully I'll have something new to report on later in the week!

Jan. 29 work session...I have come up with the title for the show at the Prince Street Cafe...The Stage is Yours which happens to be the name of one of my paintings (see picture). I'm using this painting as the front of the postcards I'm sending out. Glad to have that done! I have such a hard time naming paintings/shows. I don't paint in a series like most other artists so it's difficult to come up with 1 name that represents my work. I've tried to paint in series but usually it is a big flop for me. The first painting I do is the best and trying to do paintings with a similar theme never look as good.

My session last week was productive. I did not listen to as much music as normal. I did have a few beers...Labatts Blue...one of my favorites! I decided to retire the 3 Happy Flowers. Unframing is a pain in the you know what. I'm looking forward to working this week and seeing what new painting will appear on my board.

Here's another painting that I was working on completing..Heart Two. The Blue Dandelion and Heart Two just need signed, a coat of poly, and framed. Then we're good to go!

January 19 Work Session

Last night I finally got some time to go out into the studio to work. Mood was good and I really felt the need to finish a painting. My drinks were 2 Samuel Adams and my music was Vampire Weekend on CD and then nothing. I guess I just need the silence to create. I wanted to use real light blues and hot pink. Here are some pictures of the newest piece titled...Blue Dandelion. I hope you all enjoy it. It will be one of the pieces in the Prince Street Cafe Show.

I don't think I posted this painting. It was painted for my dermatologist Doctor Bruce Brod as a big THANK YOU for keeping me healthy!!! He's been my dermatologist for 13 years. I have had several malignant melanomas and I feel that he's saving my life every time he takes another mole off. Unlike other doctors that you only see maybe once a year if that, I get to see Dr. Brod every 6 months. I highly recommend him if anyone is looking for a derm....Hats on to you Dr. Brod! Sorry a little sun protection humor.

Spiders and bugs...so way cool. Wish i was a better sketcher. Working on that! I really do not enjoy sketching but would really like to balance the abstract with some real looking things...good to have goals!

Oh while I was working I decided to retire 3 paintings...Take a Bite, 3 Happy Flowers and Bunny Here. It is my style to paint over paintings that I feel need improvement. So here's last photo of Take A Bite...I'm excited to see the next painting!

I'm hoping to have painting time next week. Maybe I'll try and paint something real...oh my where to begin!

Excellent News...I will be the Featured Artist at the Prince Street Cafe (www.princestreetcafe.com) for the month of March 2009!! I'm very excited! With that in mind, I worked last night. I had high hopes of starting to prepare for this show and well, I have to say the creative juices were not happening. I worked on finishing up three small coffee cups that I had started a few months ago. I was hopping to be inspired to create something AbFab...big let down...totally nothing. I did manage to walk around a lot in my studio. My husband thinks I need some new tunes...he's probably right!

Holiday Tree

Here's the 2nd painting...Holiday Tree. The theme has to be a tree and this painting is a donation..bid high you all!!! So I had sketched an idea out while playing with my daughter the other day, which is not how I normally go into a painting but hey maybe it will work...and here it is. My hubby really liked this one. Nigh Walker

So tonight was my night to work. I have 2 paintings I'm working on...1 for the Lancaster County Art Assoc...theme Halloween and 1 for the Lancaster Museum of Art...theme Trees Galore. Here's the first one Night Walker. Music WXPN, Y-Rock top 11; Drink-Beer, Carlsberg Elephant Import; Mood-Sad and uninspired. (Music, drink & mood are the same for Holiday Treed) For this piece we could pick a topic I picked Black as Night. I was thinking about doing a totally black background with bloody hands coming onto the page but as you can see I only got as far as the black and the painting took a different path. The black paint really liked like shoulders and head of a woman and I put a mask on her and added some red to show blood...not my normal style but will be great for a Halloween show. My husband had a hard time understanding the painting. What do you think?

Malvern Art Show

Sunday Oct. 5th...the Malvern Art Show. I thought it would be an awesome selling day. Totally wrong...Oh well. Better luck next time! Really enjoyed the pet parade and as you can see my hubby got to do some great people watching! For all those artists out there. Malvern is a great town but this show is more about crafts than art. And I didn't really get to connect to any other vendors like I did at the Landis Woods Show. Well Enjoy! I'll be posting more as I learn how to blog!
